Auva D. An Asteroid Zooms Past Earth

On Monday March 02, 2009 a small asteroid buzzed by Earth. The rock estimated to be no more than 200 feet wide. It past our planet at an altitude of 40,000 miles at 1:44 pm universal time. It was discovered on Friday by Australian astronomers. 40,000 miles might seem long but it is only one seventh of the way to the moon. If 2009 DD45 hit the Earth it would have exploded on or near the surface with the force of a blast. The asteroid was drawn in by Earths gravity meaning that it may return back to Earth in the near misses of the Future. Though it did not affect Earth negatively and there are no needs for anybody to worry if it does return.

Discussion Questions:

1) Do you think if the asteroid does return will it leave a negative outcome?

2) Were you surprised in how close the asteroid came close to Earth?

  1. heyyy Auv. Nice acrticle. I do think the asteriod will leave a negative outcome. I think that because it says ” if 2009 DD45 hit the earth it would have exploded on or near the surface with a force of a blast” So it would exploed basiclly. yeah I was surprised that the asteriod came this close to earth because its danerous and somthing i never heard of before. All in all, Good job with this ; ]

  2. huh. that is kind of scary. It is kind of weird knowing that the astroid could come back to earth in the near future. AHHH! <=0

  3. Good article!! I cant believe that an asteroid came so close to Earth. If the asteroid exploded on Earth it would probably be really scary to anybody near by. Plus, i wonder what I would do if I saw something going 40,000 miles per hour coming to Earth. Also, maybe in the future this asteroid will come back and hit Earth. And if it does return i wonder how much damage it will do to the area.

  4. Do you know if it burned up in Earth’s atmosphere? If so, where did it land? How big was it when it landed if so?

  5. Auva, you did pretty good! I think that this blog goes well with the movie we are watching! As I read more and more of you blog, I learned alot about 2009 DD45 and what it’ll do. I do believe that this asteroid will have a negative affect on our planet. GREAT JOB! šŸ™‚

  6. Good Job Auva!!!! I really liked your article. I thought it was really cool that an asteroid was spotted. I was very surprised that an asteroid came sooooo close to earth. I think that another one may come close to earth but probably not for a few years. I really liked your article and it was very informative.

  7. i liked your article. and in science we watched a video about meteors and astreoids.i read a book once where an astreiod knocked the moon closer to eat=rth and blocked out the sun and school was shut down. i am really surprised how close the astreoid came to earth because like if your home watching tv you dont think an astroid could be coming close to earth. great job Auva !!!!!!!! šŸ™‚ !!!!!!!!

  8. Thanks Rach, nice response you had good details backing up your comments.

  9. Great! I’m going to answer both questions. I do think this asteroid will have a negative outcome if it comes back. This is because our technology isn’t strong enought to destroy some thing like this. It’s unpredictable where we’d get hit, and it would be difficult to evacuate/warn people in that area. I wasn’t surprised at how close it came to Earth. Because this was traveling at thousands of miles per hour, it could’ve easily hit Earth and I’m actually surprised it didn’t. In space, objects move extremely fast and the impact can be devastating. Good job Auva!

  10. i am very suprised how close the asteroid came to hitting the Earth. i didn’t know that our gravity had that much force.
