Technology Can Help Haiti-By Erin O.

As many know, the country of Haiti has suffered from a terrible earthquake. The earthquake hit on January 13, 2010. The earthquake reached a large number of 7.0 on the Richter scale. Some after shocks of the earthquake reached as high as a 6 on the Richter scale. As many as 200,000 lives may have been lost because of the earthquake.

The American Red Cross along with many disaster response teams have gone to Haiti to help out. But, the American Red Cross is running out of money and the U.S. is donating many of supplies, but that still is not enough. As Americans are sitting on their couch watching television, devastating pictures and videos are shown. These pictures and videos that are on television inspire us, Americans, to donate .

Another thing that is being done is, The American Red Cross and Michelle Obama are sponsoring a fund-raiser event. You can donate $10 to Haiti by just one text message. You can text “Haiti” to 90999 and $10 will be added to your cellphone bill and donated to the American Red Cross to use for their relief efforts for Haiti. So far, The American Red Cross has received over $22 million to Haiti just from text messages.

Discussion Questions:

1) Can you think of another way that technology has helped or can help the victims in Haiti?

2) Do you think technology can be hurting them in anyway?

  1. I think that the technology will be helping Haiti a lot because kids around our age use a lot of electronics. It is helpful because people can help out by just texting a foundation to donate money to the citizens of Haiti.

  2. I beilieve another way technology has helped those Hatians suffering from the earthquake is the they are using cranes to pickup rumble to save those trapped under it. But the cranes could backfire by hittting hatians with it heavy metal crane pickup. Other than that technology has really helpled our hatian friends.

  3. Great article Erin!! I think technology can be used also by getting cell phones for familys in Haiti. It might not be helping the one’s in need, but it is helping peolpe contact family members around the world. Also, If people could possibly have cash with them, they could make flight arangements to come here to America (if they have the money). I truely don’t think that technology can be hurting them. They have used technology to help them in many ways as we can all see from the article. Great job on the article!!

  4. Good job on the article!! Another way that technology can be used to help the Haitians is to use it to find out if there are any people buried under the rubble and where exactly they are. This would save a lot of the searcher’s time because they wouldn’t have to waste their time searching for people in places that they’re not. I don’t think that technology could be hurting them in any way. Technology is being used to help them, not hurt them.
