HOW DO TSUNAMIS OCCUR?– By: Julian K.

WHAT IS A TSUNAMI?

A tsunami is a large wave that hits beaches. It crosses miles of Open Ocean really fast. The speeds cause it to build up and cause deadly waves at incredible heights. They are caused when tectonic plates shift. The vibration causes the waves in the middle of the ocean to soar. When tectonic plates shift it is usually when there is an earthquake or a large meteorite hits the Earth.

THE STUCK PLATE

When an overriding plate gets stuck with a subducting plate the overriding plate has an incredible amount of friction. The friction stops the slow and steady rate of subduction and the two plates get stuck. The two plates cause an accumulation of energy which is similar to a compressed spring. This energy can be stored for decades or even centuries!!! Similar to the recent tsunami in Hawaii, that was caused by the Haiti earthquake. The energy used for that earthquake could have been detected years ago but we didn’t have the technology back then to detect it.

THE STUCK PLATE RUPTURES

When the stuck piece finally breaks or ruptures. This causes a vibration and makes a wave in the ocean causing a wave to form. This wave then turns into a tsunami.

1] How much energy do these natural monsters obtain?

2]Does anybody know how much of a threat are these large waves to people that live on islands? where do they usually hit? what have been the major tsunamis that have hit recently?

  1. 1. Hurricanes have incredible amounts of energy, and are really dangerous because of it.
    2. When these natural disasters occur, people get very prepared, so people always look out for tsunamis. These monsters usually hit areas around Hawaii, and the Pacific Coast. Also at the edge of tectonic plates. A huge tsunami occurred in the Indian ocean a couple of years ago, and was devastating.

  2. Accidentally used wrong name. This is mine:
