Earthquake in California By Madison Dieu

On Sunday April 4, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit California. Homes shook and the ground seemed to slide. This earthquake mainly damaged buildings in northern Mexico and Southern California. One person in northern Mexico was reported to be killed because their house collasped. There was extreme shaking but surprisingly, not much damage had been done. It only lasted about 2 minutes but many things inside the house was scattered and broken. Many people cried and were worried that their houses would collapse. When the Earthquake hit, a California restaurant got completely destroyed. The Haiti earthquake was much stronger because the epicenter was near a heavily populated capital city, Port-au-Prince.

Discussion Questions:

1) Why do you think the Haiti earthquake caused so much more damage, death, and destruction?

2) What does the depth of the earthquake have to do with how strong and devastating an earthquake is?

  1. 1. The Haiti earthquake had a worse effect because Haiti is a very poor country, and wasn’t prepared for an earthquake. California is, though because earthquakes are very common there.
    2. If the epicenter is near the surface, there is more damage, and devastation.

  2. The haiti earthquake caused more death and destruction becoase their houses are built on very bad foundations. It is a poor country and dosnt have the money to build steady foundations for its peoples houses. If the earthquake has greater depths I think that it would bestronger and affect a bigger area. It could also leave cracks in the ground. This is what I think about this earthquake

  3. The Hati earthquake caused more destruction because Haiti is a very poor country. They can’t afford special houses that are built to withstand earthquakes. They weren’t prepared. However, California experiences earthquakes a lot and is a lot richer, so they were able to build the special houses and be prepared for earthquakes. If an earthquake has bigger depths, I think that there will be more damage and will affect more people.

  4. I think that the Haiti earthquake caused so much more damage because Haiti doesn’t have that much money for recovery. Since they doing usually have earthquakes like this, they werent prepared. Also their economy isnt strong so this earthquake put them in a lot of dept.
The depth of this earthquake has to do with how strong and devastating it is by how much it effected the people around it. Also i was in this earthquake! I was actually in Disney Land in California! The quake didnt strike where i was thankfully and i did not even feel it!

  5. I think that the Haiti earthquake caused so much damage death and destruction because Haiti is not a wealthy country. The houses are poorly built, and so are the buildings. Haiti is a very poor country, and wasn’t prepared for an earthquake any time soon. If the epicenter is near the surface, there is more damage.

  6. I think the Haiti earthquake caused so much more damage , death ,and destruction because Haiti is very poor. They had no money to repair all the damage done. One the other hand California has a lot of money. Earthquakes happen so often there , that it was not as big of a deal. The depth of the earthquke has to do with how strong and devastating an earthquke is because the bigger the depths , the stronger it will strike an area. Bigger depths will cause more destruction which will make people who live there devastated.

  7. Thanks for sharing this great information with us Maddie! Now on to the questions. I think the earthquake in Hati caused much worse problems because it was a stronger earthquake and it struck in a more populated area. I think they have to do with each other because the more depth the more destruction and with more destruction comes more devastation.
