The Warming of the Ocean- Olivia T. Period: 7

From 1993 to 2008 the temperature in the earths ocean has been increasing at a remarkable rate.  In that time period, the temperature of the upper seven hundred meters of the water  has gone up by 0.18 degrees Celsius.  Even though that only sounds like a small increase,it represents a huge amount of heat.  That much heat is equivalent to the energy released by an exploding two billion Hiroshima-scale atomic bomb.  The trend of growing heat storage in oceans is a result of human caused warming.  Most of the heat comes from the green house effect.  About 80 or 90 percent of the heat trapped by green house gas ends up in the ocean.  The amount of heat absorbed by the ocean varies every year.  For example, from 1993 to 1998 the rate of ocean warming slowed.  That occurred because of the eruption of mount Pinatubo in the Philippines.  This eruption cooled the ocean and stopped the water level from rising of several years.  Then, from 1998 to 2003 the amount of heat grew sharply.  Also, from 2003 to 2008 the heat in the ocean stayed at a steady rate.  After 15 years of varied heating the oceans temperature has changed remarkably.  The oceans heating is a major problem and we need to do something about it!

Discussion Questions-

1. What do you think about this problem that is occurring in the oceans?

2. What do you think we could do to stop the rise of heat?
